Key One Yeom
Korean reality, told through people who refuse to fall in line.
A Daehak-ro playhouse, the all-night offices of Guro Digital Complex, a shuttered mining town, a women's prison. Novelist and IT consultant Key One Yeom finds them there. Winner of the 5th Hwangsanbeol Young Writers' Award.
One kind of hero
Key One Yeom writes about contemporary Korea: its subcontracting chains and crypto charts, its boxing gyms and prisons, its startups, election camps and online opinion wars. What he is after is not a portrait of the system but the people who will not fit inside it.
His books move between genres, from workplace drama to comic crime, sports story, nature drama and theatrical thriller. What holds them together is a kind of character: a tech worker who refuses to be a number, a brother and sister who stepped off the track of competition, a teenage boxer who refuses the revenge everyone expects of her. They step out of their orbit knowing they will pay for it.

About the author
Key One Yeom (염기원) is a South Korean novelist who interprets contemporary Korean reality through singular characters and stories. His six novels range from workplace drama and comic crime to a boxing story, a thriller and a tale of African wild dogs, but at the center of each stands someone who will not conform to the order around them.
